As I reflect on my agile journey and experience this is a letter I wrote to myself. I feel this is a letter every Agile lead or Agile Chapter Head, Head of Agile or whatever the title is in your organization need to send to their teams.
Dear Team Paul,
Subject: Agility Beyond Metrics. Dismantle the Silos. Prioritize the Team
I hope this message finds you well. I want to address an essential shift in our approach to running an effective Agile organization. It’s crucial to understand that Agile is more than a numbers game; it’s a learning game. Our focus must be on creating built-in learning pathways that allow for continuous improvement and innovation.
We need to establish boundaries that provide our teams with the freedom to evolve and grow. These boundaries should not be rigid but rather serve as guidelines that can expand as our teams become more self-managing, self-organizing, and self-producing. Imagine the potential when our teams operate with such agility that boundaries become unnecessary. This is the level of performance we aspire to achieve.
However, we must acknowledge the current challenges. Our organization has become siloed, with an overemphasis on management hierarchies. This has led to a culture where teams feel lost in the shuffle, and individuals feel unseen. Decisions are too often made based on metrics, spreadsheets, and PowerPoint presentations, rather than on the insights and needs of our people. We must recognize that the time for change is now. Organizations that merely build structures around buzzwords without genuine substance will not stand the test of time.

Agile is more than a methodology; it’s a mindset that values people over processes and learning over rigid adherence to numbers. By creating an environment where teams have the freedom to evolve, we empower them to become self-managing, self-organizing, and self-producing entities. This is agility in its purest form.
As we move forward, let’s dismantle the silos and hierarchical barriers that stifle innovation. Let’s shift our focus from spreadsheets to the human spirit, from PowerPoints to empowerment. It’s time to see beyond the numbers and recognize the potential in each individual.
Remember, the heart of an effective Agile organization beats not to the rhythm of metrics, but to the pulse of the people. Together, we can redefine what it means to be truly agile.
Let’s commit to this new direction together. It’s not about the numbers; it’s about the learning and growth that comes from every experience. I look forward to discussing this further and hearing your thoughts on how we can collectively move forward.
Warm regards,
Paul
