As an agile practitioner, I’ve sat in many meetings on WSJF discussions and calculations. I have left some with valuable insights and action items and in some cases it has felt like a waste of time.

In the world of Agile, the Weighted Shortest Job First (WSJF) is a pivotal tool for feature prioritization, yet its true value is unlocked only when it’s integrated into a holistic view of the product’s goals. 🎯

It’s about finding that sweet spot between urgency and impact, which ultimately leads to more efficient and effective workflows.

WSJF measures the Cost of Delay relative to the Duration of the Work (Job). The higher the WSJF score the better.

The Cost of Delay (CoD) is also a critical factor in assessing the impact of time on opportunities or risks associated with implementing solutions. It’s not just about the numbers; it’s about understanding the broader implications on finance, legal, risk, compliance, brand experience, customer experience and more.

Let’s shift our focus from isolated WSJF calculations to a systems-thinking approach that considers validated Epic MVPs. This way, we ensure that our efforts in prioritization are meaningful and contribute to the system’s optimization as a whole.
